IMAX 70mm film is a big deal, especially when a big movie like Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer will be coming out on it. 70mm, 35mm, and IMAX film size comparisons reveal why you need to see any move in IMAX 15/70 (IMAX 1570) film when possible, especially when the movie stars Cillian Murphy. Projecting the film is no small task either, with massive 15,000 Watt explosive Arc Lamps are required to illuminate the 5.5 feet per second of film flying by (or 3.5 Mph) and here I can give a close look at the films including 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, 70mm 5/70 (5 perf 70mm) and 15/70 (15 perf 70mm) as well as what an Arc Lamp looks like and what it means. We are talking about 18k resolution of film that will be projected on gigantic dome screens, and I will help you find locations (where to see Oppenheimer on 70mm IMAX film) near you that will be presenting the movie in this format. Note that this video was created in 2016 and this theater has since transitioned to laser. This short film takes you deep inside an IMAX projection booth revealing the meticulous process of threading a 70mm film print through a Mini Cooper sized film projector. The resolution of 70mm film is still far greater than what 4K digital projectors can produce. IMAX has been around since the 70's and still boasts a higher quality image than today's digital. So if you're wondering why IMAX costs a little bit more, think of the projectionists! W're not just putting in a Blu Ray and pressing play... Some of these shots were taken a year apart. I began shooting with the GoPro in December of 2014 and started to cut this together. After a couple of months I couldn't really figure out how I wanted this to flow so I put it on the shelf for a while. Towards the end of summer 2015 I picked up the Nikon D5500 and began shooting more with that. Between that and the Hero 4 I was able to get a lot of interesting shots and by early 2016 I had the final cut. Quite a long process but after working in IMAX for 9+ years I really felt like most people seeing a 70mm film were completely unaware of how this system works or what IMAX is. IMAX is an aging technology but is still superior in many ways. Noel Pratt has worked his magic on my 35mm film projector and having just collected it I thought it was a good time to go through some of the film gauge formats and explain by illustrating them side by side why one is superior to the other. Many 4K disc collectors do seem to struggle to fully understand why one release is better than another and in many cases the film gauge a movie was shot on confirms why one is among the best 4K releases you will ever see and another can be somewhat disappointing. For example, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was shot on 16mm and as this has recently had a special 4K release by Second Sight Films you may have to bear this in mind to temper your expectations.
