The wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship 'Endurance' has been found off the coast of Antarctica more than a century after it sank. Historian Dan Snow, who is a member of the Endurance22 expedition team, said the discovery was 'like a miracle' and the ship is 'almost perfectly preserved'. He told Sky News live from Antarctica about the moment the team saw the ship for the first time. This episode I discuss endurance: our ability to perform effort over extended amounts of time. I describe the four kinds of endurance: muscular endurance, long duration (single-set) efforts, and the two kinds of high intensity interval training (HIIT). I discuss efficiency of effort and maximizing quality of effort, and a hydration formula. I review how our heart literally gets stronger when we oxygenate muscles properly. I also discuss motivation for long bouts of work and the visual physiological basis of the "extra gear" we all can leverage for effort. In this talk, Dr Seiler explains in words and pictures how modern exercise physiology laboratories reveal the body’s remarkable capacity for adaptation. He also tells us about the “laboratories” developed by athletes and coaches since the start of the Cold War in the 1950s. The laboratory of the scientist and the laboratory of the coach/athlete come together as Dr. Seiler describes his own journeys back and forth between them. By connecting the power of both, we have learned why “no pain no gain” is a slick slogan, but a fundamentally flawed approach to getting faster and fitter over time. Stephen Seiler has spent years studying the training habits of great endurance athletes. What he discovered has shattered the myths he grew up with in the US. Let him tell you why going “green” is also important for building endurance sustainably. This month, 107 years after it's sinking, one of the world's most famous shipwrecks - Endurance - was found at the bottom of the Weddell Sea in Antarctica. Endurance had left South Georgia for Antarctica on December 5, 1914, carrying 27 men (plus one stowaway, who became ship’s steward), 69 dogs, and a tomcat nicknamed Mrs. Chippy. The goal of the expedition leader Ernest Shackleton, who had twice fallen short—once agonizingly so—of reaching the South Pole, was to establish a base on Antarctica’s Weddell Sea coast. From there, Shackleton was going to traverse the continent on foot. Almost immediately though, the crew ran into pack ice, and from that point on a heroic effort would ensue to keep the crew alive. Dobrodružný příběh britské expedice, která měla za úkol přejít napříč Antarktidou. Její velitel kapitán Ernest Shackleton a jeho posádka, která čítala 27 členů, úkol nesplnila. Důvodem byly nepříznivé polární podmínky na které nebyla výprava zvyklá. Proto se i jejich loď nazývaná Endurance po začátku plavby potopila kvůli zamrznutí a tlaku ledu. Výprava musela tedy dále pokračovat pěšky. Z lodi se zachránilo nejdůležitější a postupovalo se dále. Po několikakilometrovém pochodu dorazila posádka k Sloním ostrovům. Tam se výprava utábořila a později se rozhodlo, že velitel E. Shackleton spolu s dalšími muži vyrazí pro pomoc. Po 10měsíčním pochodu nakonec dorazili do cíle a pro ostatní členy pak přijela vysněná záchrana.

La spedizione Endurance, conosciuta anche come spedizione imperiale trans-antartica (Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition), è stata una missione esplorativa finanziata dal Regno Unito diretta verso le regioni antartiche. Svoltasi negli anni 1914-1917 la missione era comandata da Ernest Shackleton a bordo dell'Endurance ed aveva come obiettivo l'attraversamento dell'Antartide partendo dal mare di Weddell. Il gruppo doveva poi essere recuperato dalla nave Aurora nell'altro lato del continente, sulla costa del mare di Ross.

The type of endurance you use will have a big impact on precisely what form your new fitness takes. That's due to these lesser-discussed changes that occur peripherally - in and around the muscle. These include, for example, increased capillary density shuttling blood and oxygen to the muscle, increases in mitochondria, and even an improved "muscle pump" effect (which probably isn't what you think it is!).
