Loneliness doesn't always stem from being alone. For architect Grace Kim, loneliness is a function of how socially connected we feel to the people around us and it's often the result of the homes we live in. She shares an age-old antidote to isolation: cohousing, a way of living where people choose to share space with their neighbors, get to know them, and look after them. Rethink your home and how you live in it with this eye-opening talk. Groups in Denmark and the U.S. are choosing to live in intentionally intergenerational communities, which emerged to strengthen social ties between aging seniors and their younger counterparts who are balancing work and family. People living in them say the model fosters an interdependent environment and helps everyone feel more comfortable with the process of getting older. NewsHour Weekend's Saskia de Melker reports.

Trish is the owner of StorySpring Consulting and Director of Community Engagement at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work. A social worker to the core, she advances social change by connecting leaders to resources, opportunities and each other. She is a passionate advocate for housing solutions that address both affordability and the global loneliness epidemic. At the University of Denver, she leads community engagement initiatives and creates gatherings that advance social justice. As a consultant with StorySpring, she provides strategy, facilitation and coaching to nonprofits, social changemakers, and intentional communities. Fueled by her own suburban loneliness and a desire for community, Trish became a founder of Denver’s newest cohousing community. She believes that we are most alive when we are connected, and that intergenerational communal living offers an alternative to our increasingly isolated world. Drawing upon years of experience living communally throughout the world, she urges us to find one another and build our own micro-villages. Trish supports people and organizations advancing social change by connecting them to resources, opportunities and each other. At the University of Denver, she leads community engagement initiatives and creates gatherings that explore a variety of social justice topics. She listens to community organizations and co-creates mutually-beneficial partnerships that push forward social change. As a consultant and owner of StorySpring, she provides strategy, facilitation and coaching to nonprofits and social changemakers, specifically around their communications and public image efforts. She is a founding member of Denver’s newest cohousing community, Aria Cohousing, and a passionate advocate for housing solutions that address both the crisis of affordability and the global loneliness epidemic. She is in the process of establishing a micro-village in Wheat Ridge that addresses both. Can microvillages make housing better for a new generation? | Trish Becker-Hafnor | Chase Street Commons Subscribe to Freethink on YouTube ►► 🤍 Up next ►► Can the Apartment Industry Help Solve Homelessness? 🤍 More than half of all baby boomers owned homes by age 30. For Gen Xers, that number dwindled to 48%, and for millennials, it’s 42%. A lack of affordable housing is a problem, and the problem is more and more pronounced for each subsequent generation. And for those millennials who do end up getting their suburban, stereotypical American Dream home, they can find it is not always what they envisioned — like they needed to create their own Dream. That’s why one millenial, Trish Becker-Hafnor, created Chase Street Commons, located in Denver, Colorado. Becker-Hafnor’s solution is coliving. Instead of single-family homes, cohousing families reside in apartments or condos (often called cohousing developments) or planned communities specifically designed to foster community. What Becker-Hafnor’s American Dream looks like is a life filled with friendship, purpose, personal growth and a feeling of belonging. Tired of living in what she saw as an unconnected neighbourhood in the city, Jane yearned for a more fulfilling existence at home, one where she could truly connect with those around her and still have the independence she wanted. She couldn't find it in London, so she created it herself in Dorset in a 'co-housing' set-up. 'Co-housing' combines shared and private space. It is about more than sharing meals. Tthe group exists to care for each other in times of need and provide one other with a sense of belonging. A lot of emphasis is put on living sustainably. Jane's Threshold Centre has been ten years in the making ,and she hopes it will provide inspiration to other communities.

Marmalade Lane is the UK's largest cohousing project. Located in Orchard Park, Cambridge, it was developed by TOWN and designed by Mole Architects. The 42 houses and apartments are the result of a collaborative design process that involved the residents, developers and architects working together to produce a new community, with individual homes centred around communal space and shared facilities. The result is a housing development like no other, with a shared sense of achievement and belonging. In this film, the designers, developers and residents reflect on the development of the scheme and their experience of cohousing.

Cohousing communities are collaborative neighborhoods created with intention and a little ingenuity. They bring together the value of private homes with the benefits of more sustainable and community living. That means residents actively participate in the design and operation of their neighborhoods, and share common facilities and good connections with neighbors. Cohousing Communities act as innovative answers to today’s environmental and social problems. In this episode of Planet Community, travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where three adjacent cohousing communities have formed over the last 20 years, and are now home to over 300 people! Let’s get real. We are facing multiple, interconnected global dangers, rooted in the exploitation of people and planet. These dangers include climate change, wealth disparity, and social injustice. These are co-created and mutually reinforcing problems. They are systemic, and systemic problems require holistic solutions. What do community solutions look like? Whether it’s a small group in a collective household or hundreds of people on a piece of land, intentional communities are micro-societies offering insights into living a cooperative set of values. They are living laboratories working to create and model whole systems, integrated locally to globally.

Baudezernent Martin Linne will in Duisburg auf alten Brachflächen insgesamt rund 4000 Wohneinheiten schaffen.
